Exploring the story of one of Baldur’s Gate 3’s most influential companions, Gale
The world of Baldur’s Gate 3 offers a number of ways to play, including the existence of pre-made character sheets called “Character Origins”. Now Larian Games has made character creation as customizable as possible, but for those who want to jump right into the action, Character Origins is your best bet. With that in mind, there are a number of intriguing storylines you can follow depending on what you choose.
What are the origin characters?
Origin characters are playable heroes that can affect your Baldur’s Gate 3 games in big ways. These default characters each have unique story lines which eventually intertwine with the main plot whenever you encounter them as important NPCs. Additionally, Larian also confirmed a plethora of different companions planned for the game’s debut in August 2023. When the time comes, you’ll also be able to recruit regular companions — NPCs with distinct personalities and subclasses — as well as up to 12 different employees (one for each class).
Additionally, Origin Characters are available if you ever want to experience the story through their eyes, with the major caveat that they are racially and class-locked. That said, many speculate that this could be changed after the game’s full release. But if you lean towards the high fantasy aspects of large-scale RPGs, you might be interested in The Wizard’s Origin Story featuring a disgraced archmage named Gale.
Who is Gale?
Gale is a human mage from Waterdeep whose magic was removed by the goddess of magic Mystra after his attempt to steal her god failed. On top of having his spells removed as punishment, Gale was also cursed with the Netherese Orb, an object that threatens to explode in a city-killing explosion if not constantly fed with magical energy.
Now, like the rest of the origin characters, Gale ended up with an Illithid cyst in his brain after a series of mysterious events. That same scratch now threatens to turn him into a Mindflayer, motivating a very concerned Gale to avoid an unfortunate fate for someone who already has a secret time bomb permanently strapped to his chest.
Like most NPCs found in Faerun, certain dialogue choices can make or break your relationship with Gale. And if you’re familiar with how wizards are usually portrayed, you’d think that Gale probably has high expectations in all of his relationships. What is Gale’s class in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Gale starts out as a human mage who can take either the Evocation or Abjuration subclass.
Similarly, a handful of other character origins are currently available, each with their own set of stocks. Recently, the game’s developers released Dark Urge, the first origin character of Baldur’s Gate 3 that acts more as a background than a playable story. As the name implies, this is meant to be an origin that sets your character on a sinister path as you slowly remember pieces of your horrific past.
Overall, Gale’s Story is a great option for new players looking to get into card magic D&D. Although lacking with starting stats, there are a ton of gear options you can get in the game to optimize your mage build. So if a rogue wizard’s race against time sounds like adventure for you, then take on the mantle of wonder and find a way to save yourself from ceremorphosis before time runs out.
