China’s Zhang Yufei overtook Mac Neil in the final 20 meters to win. Yufei finished in 56.12 seconds, while Mac Neil finished in 56.45.
23-year-old Mac Neil, of London, Ont., won gold in the same event at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, defeating runner-up Yufei. She also took gold in the 100 butterfly at the 2019 world championships.
