Women’s World Cup co-hosts New Zealand were stunned by tournament debutants the Philippines, who claimed their first ever victory in the tournament with a 1-0 victory in Wellington.
Sarina Bolden’s historic goal midway through the first half was enough to secure a seismic upset, with Jacqui Hand’s equalizer ruled out for offside as New Zealand failed to hold on for a first-round win over Norway.
The result opens Group A wide open, with Norway looking to bounce back from their opening defeat against Switzerland in an all-European clash.
Earlier on Tuesday, Catalina Usme and 18-year-old star Linda Caicedo scored to give Colombia a 2-0 win over South Korea in their opening match.
On Monday Brazil kicked things off with a comfortable 4-0 win over Panama as Ary Borges scored a hat-trick, while Italy beat Argentina 1-0 in the day’s first match with veteran striker Cristiana Girelli coming off the bench to grab the winner. Germany beat Morocco 6-0.

Catalina Usme and Linda Caicedo scored to give Colombia a 2-0 win over South Korea in their Women’s World Cup opener on Tuesday.
Usme scored from a free-kick in the 30th minute after a handball by South Korea, sending goalkeeper Yoon Younggeul the wrong way before slotting the ball into the far corner.
Caicedo, an 18-year-old Real Madrid forward, doubled Colombia’s lead nine minutes later, unleashing a high shot that Yoon got a hand on but didn’t have the power to send it over the bar. The ball went into the net, to the delight of the yellow-clad Colombian fans at the Sydney Football Stadium.
“Well, I’m extremely happy, but it’s about everyone’s collective work,” Caicedo said of her first World Cup goal.
“The feeling that the group had going into the field, we were a little anxious, we wanted the World Cup to start and we wanted to start on the right foot, that was something essential.
“Very happy for the goal and the victory.”
Korean-American teenager Casey Phair became the youngest substitute in Women’s World Cup history, coming off in the 78th minute, just 26 days after her 16th birthday.
